Skoogmusic are looking for a talented and creative iOS games developer to take the lead in the development of a new music learning game for children.
- Educated to Graduate/Masters level in a games development related discipline or significant games industry experience.
- Excellent game design skills are a must.
- Programming skills in Swift, Objective-C, C and C++.
- Experienced in the use of SpriteKit, SceneKit, Unity, Metal, Open GL.
- 1-2 years games industry experience desirable.
- A strong interest in music, music technology, audio and/or sound design would be beneficial.
- An awareness of accessibility issues and/or educational pedagogy would be an advantage.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Planning, development and beta launch of iOS music learning game.
- Design, research and evaluate future software developments and functionality improvements.
- Participation in future product conception.
Detailed Job Description:
This is an exciting opportunity for a software developer to take a leading role in the conception, development and launch of a new learning game for children that explores music via adventure and puzzle game formats using the hands-on Skoog interface. Skoog is a tactile interface that is accessible to all, including children and those with physical or learning disabilities.
We plan to create an interactive musical playground that supports children’s natural musicality, learning through play, leading children on a journey to create, perform and share their own music. The learning content (musical concepts) will be integrated into the puzzle and performance gameplay. Initially users will learn about their Skoog and will then advance to explore tonality, rhythm, improvisation, composition and performance.
We are seeking a talented and creative iOS developer who is looking to become an integral part of this exciting music technology company, based in the heart of Scotland’s capital.
Your key responsibility will be the creation and development of gaming content for the new app, supported by the existing software development team. You will be responsible for the development through to beta deployment on iOS. You will be actively engaged in the design, research and evaluation of future developments and functionality improvements to the software with a focus on good interaction design practices for accessible gameplay.
You will have at least a graduate level qualification in a games development related discipline and/or a substantial body of games industry experience. You will have extensive knowledge and experience of programming for iOS with excellent skills in several of the following: Swift, Objective-C, C and C++, SpriteKit, SceneKit, Unity, Metal, Open GL. You will have an understanding of interfacing with custom-built hardware controllers and will be comfortable with the use of version management systems such as Github. You will ideally have experience of working in a games industry environment.
A strong interest in music/music technology and/or sound design would be a real benefit, as would the ability to play a musical instrument to a proficient level. Familiarity with a range of recent child-friendly games titles would also be an advantage as would an understanding of the issues arising from running intensive graphics/ audio software on iOS.
The right candidate will have a creative and analytical personality with very high quality standards and an autonomous and results orientated working style. They will be proactive and innovative with the ability to work flexibly and to finish work to deadlines.
The iOS Games Developer reports primarily to the CTO but must also provide support to all members of the team. They must be able to prioritise their own workload to deliver against deadlines whilst managing multiple tasks such as feedback from beta testers and functionality requests.
The initial duration of this position is 6 months, commencing in September 2016, but pending a successful outcome, we anticipate an opportunity to become an integral part of the team on a full time basis and to contribute to the development of future gaming products. Working hours are reasonably flexible for this role but you will normally be required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week. You may, from time to time, be required to work longer or unsociable hours.
Skoogmusic Ltd was founded in 2009 and has been selling its accessible music product, Skoog, to the education market with over 3500 core users. Skoog is a deformable, multidimensional tactile controller that was designed in conjunction with physical modeling synthesis software for Mac and PC to allow users with physical and learning difficulties to play a musical instrument.
The company has just launched Skoog 2.0, the wireless, iOS compatible version of its product. The partner iOS app is now available from the App store and is used to setup the connection, choose notes/instruments/ sensitivity of the Skoog for use as a musical instrument, or as a MIDI controller for other compatible apps.
Skoog 2.0 is currently available to buy from the Apple Store (online and in selected retail stores) across Europe, USA and Canada, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore and through a number of international educational distributors.
