Enabling musicians. Technology, creativity and understanding. Skoog Guest Blog

With Skoog featuring in Singapore this  week at the ENABLED celebration event and the Skoog video going live on the Apple store across Europe, I thought it a good time to share some international Skoog type things on our blog.
This guest blog comes from Michele Russano in Parma, Italy  He has been working in the field of music and accessibility for several years now but is a relative new comer to Skoog.  Here he gives us an overview of his thoughts so far and plans for the future. (Translated form the original Italian which is included Below. Thanks to Ken McCorkindale for the translation)

micheleMy musical adventure with many young people with special educational needs started in 2009, when I first learned about Figurenotes. Today, in and around Parma, 34 young disabled musicians are able to create music with me from their own homes or wherever their daily activities are organised.
I carry all the musical instruments with me everyday, including guitar, bass, keyboard, glockenspiel, drums, mixer, microphones, stands, amp, and last but not least, from this year, a laptop and the Skoog!
After having played and experimented with Skoog I can say that, with its 5 coloured buttons and its touch sensitive corners and faces, it is an ingenious creation and very useful for someone like me who is looking for simple ways to bring young disabled people closer to music.

I first learned of the Skoog thanks to Drake Music Scotland on Facebook, I then explored the website at skoogmusic.com and watching the videos I said to myself: it’s amazing! I want this instrument!!!
I immediately downloaded the coloured skores of all the songs, I read all the information possible and right after that I wrote to one Dr Benjamin Schogler to find out how to buy one. (Buy the Skoog on the Apple Store across Europe)
As soon as it arrived I gave it to some of my students and it became clear immediately that this was a great opportunity. It was a great satisfaction to see them smiling and having fun.

My special students have learned to play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and glockenspiel using Figurenotes. And now with the Skoog, playing in time with the drumbeat was child’s play!!!
A few days later I transcribed Coldplay’s Viva la Vida in Figurenotes, a musical notation method that uses colours and shapes, and we played it, but this time accompanied by the violin melody thanks to the Skoog, it was an instant success!!! (Download load Skoog Vivi la VIDA materials)
Even Cesare, an autistic kid, played with ease, he already played keyboard and drums and with the Skoog he followed with violin the melodies of the classic tracks included in the software, reading from the coloured notes on the screen. It was amazing to see the range of musical expression Cesare was able to generate pressing the soft buttons with gentle dynamism.
skoog mountI have also found the mount-kit very useful, when it was fixed to Gianluca’s wheelchair it allowed him to move his arm and play drums in time without too much effort.
The potential for interaction with other software such as Garage band and Logic is very interesting, it extends the possibilities for making sounds but also the ability to record in real time a rhythm, a melody, or to listen to a base track and improvise.
With the Skoog you can play and experiment without limits, it’s all in the hands and the imagination of whoever is playing it.
I am convinced there are still lots of other ways to make music accessible to kids with special needs. Creative and innovative thought, the understanding of our young musicians and their problems, advanced technology, all these things are an essential mix for finding solutions and for enabling lots of people to live exciting experiences.
Music and art, sound and colour, many artists find inspiration in people. Visual designers create artistic videos with the viewer in mind, whilst educators and teachers develop innovative educational proposals to bring us closer to music and art, programmers and designers create software and instruments to make learning music more immediate and easier. All this has fascinated me for some years and has helped me bring to life new musical projects specifically for young people with special needs.
Thanks Michele. Looking forward to meeting up in person sometime soon. For  more ideas about how Skoog could become part of your musical portfolio check out other stories on the blog, or why not have a read through some of our case studies.
